Winners for February 2011

The theme: THE FANTASTIC
The winners:

POETRY

Invisible

Heroes –
Not Superman,
Not Wonder Woman,
Just people
Regular, everyday people.

No superpowers,
Fancy costumes,
Or even cool gadgets.
Just personality,
And humanity
They make themselves a hero.

A single parent,
Who does their best to fill both roles.

A teacher,
Truly trying to do their job.

Even a small child,
Who, though naïve,
Sees the world through golden eyes.

These are the heroes in our world.
Each one of them fantastic,
In their own special way.

They’re all around us.
Sometimes,
We just don’t see them.

Artist's Statement: The first thing that popped into my head when I saw that the theme was "the fantastic," was superheroes.  But I didn't want to write a poem about superheroes, so instead I chose to write about the real heroes of our world.  I felt that acknowledging the everyday, generally unrecognized heroes fit this theme perfectly.
