Black Prism
Laughter.
Essential in life,
It keeps your mind clear
Open,
And ready for anything.
Good or bad,
It gets you through the day.
And sometimes,
Laughing is the only thing you can do.
It is a source of infinite strength –
And one that only you can create.
But ultimately,
Laughter offers an escape.
An escape from reality,
Pain
Hardships,
Even an escape from yourself.
Without laughter,
The world would become lost.
Lost in all that is wrong –
Never looking at what is right.
People would die.
And life as we know it would become trapped in a black prism –
An inescapable, suffocating,
Humorless prism.

Artist's statement:
Generally, laughter is perceived as happy and the result of something humorous. But I wanted to interpret this theme of humor in a different way. I wanted to show that humor isn't just a daily action or an entertainment industry or even something that occurs during times of joy. I wanted to show that humor provides relief from the bad, and that it is an essential part of life that cannot ever afford to disappear from this world.
The Song of the Birds
Do not forget your smile
When your dear friend cracks a joke
When you look deep into the warmth of the sun
When you are with your true love
When you have open the most excellent novel,
And as you flip through each page
At the green leaves at the end of a bitter winter
While watching the sun set, then rise, then set
At the laughter of a one year old
While receiving a hand-written letter
At being in love
At the sound of the ocean
And at the laughter, the sound of the birds
Yet, do not remember your smile
When your dear friend falls deep on his head
When the love of your life disappears
When the world seems to be crashing down
When the rain comes through, pouring harder than ever
When the ocean seems to not crack a sound
When the stars have left the sky
And when the birds seem to be mute
